It occurs to me, perhaps appropriately as we prepare to ring in the new year, just how much

humanity is a group of random leftover survivors. War and misery anyone? After watching the

first two seasons of Showtime’s The Tudors on Netflix steaming (in an act of self-gifting over the

course of several days before Christmas), the PBS documentary The Dark Ages (600 years

the most vile and vicious warring imaginable), and finally two episodes of an unfathomably dry

BBC documentary entitled The Monarchy (in an act of video self-flagellation) several days

after Christmas, I am compelled to say I just don’t know about us – people. Happy New Year!
